National Puzzle Day

What is National Puzzle Day all about?

January 29th is National Puzzle Day. It is a day to solve your favorite puzzles. Or try some new ones – by yourself or with family and friends. What type of puzzle do you like best? Is it a crossword puzzle? Or another word puzzle, a jigsaw puzzle, or a math puzzle? Or do you prefer a 3-D puzzle like a Rubik’s Cube? Whatever your passion, today’s the day to enjoy the challenge and satisfaction puzzles bring to our lives.

Why should you celebrate a dedication to puzzles?

Puzzles are more than a fun, challenging pastime. Because puzzles help you cognitively and socially. Experts claim that solving puzzles stimulates both sides of the brain. Thereby improving your reasoning power, short-term memory, and creative problem-solving ability. Also, puzzles can help boost your visual-spatial awareness. In addition, some puzzles help improve your fine motor skills – such as movements of your hands and fingers. What’s more, puzzles boost the production of dopamine, which increases feelings of pleasure, satisfaction, and motivation.

How can you celebrate National Puzzle Day?

Here are a few of the ways you can make Puzzle Day one you will long remember:

  1. Start with your favorite puzzle. Beginning with the puzzle that you usually master gives you the winning feeling you need to tackle some more challenging puzzles.
  2. Try a new puzzle. How about trying out a puzzle in the same category as your favorite? For example, if you love word searches, how about trying a crossword puzzle? Or, switch up the numbers game you normally play. Like jigsaw puzzles? How about trying out a 3-D modeling kit with wooden pieces?
  3. Invite friends and/or family to join you. One of the best ways to bond with family and friends is by tackling a puzzle together. It allows us to catch up on our lives and discuss ways to ‘beat’ the puzzle together. Gather around our Winslow Game Table and create new and lasting memories with your friends and family.
  4. Create your very own unique puzzle. Rise to the challenge and create a puzzle in the style you like best. For example, create your own word search or crossword puzzle. You can do so around a theme if you so desire. Then distribute it to your kids or grandkids.

Do Amish families bond around puzzles?

Amish families spend lots of quality time together as a tightly knit group. They strengthen family bonds over puzzles, board games, outdoor games, and bicycle riding, among other activities. So it’s little wonder that Amish artisans build a wide variety of puzzles, board games, and toys for kids of all ages to enjoy. Amish families may not specifically celebrate National Puzzle Day, but family time is an important part of daily life in the Amish community.
