Sunshine and Shadows Quilt Garden 2012

Sunshine and Shadows Quilt Garden 2012

In 2012 Weaver Furniture Sales participated in the The Quilt Gardens along the Heritage Trail in Northern Indiana’s Amish Country for their second year.  The Sunshine and Shadows Quilt Garden 2012 was planted and managed by Carolyn and Christy Miller. Along with Ida Weaver, one of the founders of Weaver Furniture Sales.  The Sunshine and Shadows Quilt Garden was created using Red Salvia, Orange Marigold, Yellow Marigold, White Allysum, and Black Landscaping Mulch.

Why We Joined The Quilt Gardens

Weaver Furniture Sales is located on the farmstead of LeRoy and Ida Weaver just a few miles south of Shipshewana in the countryside along the Heritage Trail. For more than 20 years, LeRoy and Ida have welcomed visitors from all over the United States to their large furniture showroom (a converted dairy barn). LeRoy and Ida thoroughly enjoy meeting people and learning about them. The 2011 Amish Shadow quilt garden provided additional opportunities to meet people from many areas of the United States. Along with enhancing the “Welcome to our homestead” message to their regular clients.

The 2012 Sunshine and Shadows allowed LeRoy and Ida to continue getting to know more people interested in gardening and quilts. The quilt garden was created and maintained by Carolyn Miller, a local gardener.  This allowed us to expand our display of local art. As well as enhanced the experience for our visitors at Weaver Furniture Sales.

Finding Our Inspiration

Over 40 years, Carolyn Miller’s mother pieced and quilted more than 100 quilts bearing a stunning design. These quilts were often shipped to clients across the United States.  That said, Carolyn formed a lasting love for her mother’s special quilt pattern. Now, inspired by her mother’s artistry and her love of spending long hours in the sunlight and shadows of her home garden, Carolyn plans to create the special “Sunshine and Shadows” quilt garden.

The specific history related to the Sunshine and Shadow quilt design is unknown. At least by the group at Weaver Furniture Sales.  As stated previously, Sunshine and Shadow has been a major part of Carolyn Miller’s life through the quilting work that her mother completed during her lifetime.  Like Carolyn’s experience with this design, the Sunshine and Shadows pattern is a favorite in the Amish communities in Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Indiana. Typically, the pattern utilizes alternating dark and light colors next to each other. According to the Metropolitan
Museum of Art, those outside the Amish community believe the design and alternating colors are “a representation of the Amish people’s belief in life’s balances.”
